with Natasha Raikhel, 2003

Helen Leibacher is from Chicago. Her dear husband Ernst, who passed away on June 24, 2000, grew up in Inglewood, California. Ernst served on the City Council in Los Angeles and was a field officer for the League of California Cities. He served in the United States in a unit that was the predecessor of the Navy Seals.

Ernst graduate from Georgetown University. In his senior thesis, which was a study of the Merchant Marine, he postulated that war was inevitable and predicted that one would begin by 1939. His professor, who was also Undersecretary of Commerce at the time, said that such a prediction was impossible and made Ernst delete the reference to the war's inevitability from his thesis.

In 1958 on New Year's Eve, the Lebachers purchased a grapefruit grove in Sun City. In 1999, they donated this much-appreciated property to UCR. The proceeds from the sale of this property created the Ernst and Helen Leibacher Endowed Fund in Botany and Plant Sciences, which in 2001 became the Endowed Chair fund for CEPCEB Director, Natasha Raikhel. This fund was intended to facilitate important research by funding programs that help sustain and strengthen UCR's agricultural research. Said Helen, "Both Ernst and I appreciate that something good can be done with the grove."

The Center for Plant Cell Biology honors Ernst and Helen Leibacher as Laureates and is grateful for their commitment to the University of California, Riverside
