Research Summary:

We study the eukaryotic microbes known as oomycetes, especially Phytophthora infestans which causes the late blight diseases of tomato and potato.  Most of our research involves characterizing genes involved in important aspects of the growth of P. infestans, particularly the development and germination of spores.  For example, by incorporating data from microarray expression profiling, transcription factor purification studies, the functional dissection of promoters, and genome database mining we are assembling the transcriptional networks involved in sporulation and spore germination, for both sexual and asexual spores.  This is a multidisciplinary approach that combines the tools of genetics, genomics, bioinformatics cell biology, and biochemistry.  Such work is revealing novel aspects of the biology of the oomycetes, and in the long-term should lead to improved methods for controlling the diseases that they cause on crop and ornamental plants.
