Research Summary:

Research in the Springer lab focuses on understanding the molecular events that regulate the development of leaves and other lateral organs that initiate from the shoot apical meristem (SAM), a group of undifferentiated cells at the growing shoot tip. Coordination of several different processes, including cell division, expansion and differentiation, is required for proper formation of lateral organs. At the molecular level, many genes have been shown to play important roles in the regulation of organ initiation and patterning. In particular, antagonistic relationships between transcription factors expressed in the SAM and transcription factors expressed in organ primordia are important for the establishment and maintenance of distinct SAM and primordia domains. We are interested in understanding mechanisms that control the formation of a boundary between the SAM and organ primordia. We study several transcription factors that are expressed at organ boundaries in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.
